Day 18 - Selfless

I was thinking today about all that David sacrificed when he looked over the balcony and plotted to sleep with Bathsheeba. He was such a worshiper. He was a man who had a way of speaking to and knowing God in ways that are still profound to us today. But all that glory, all that worship, and all that relationship were put aside that day for David's selfish desire. It is kind of sad. He had worked hard all of his life to lift up God's name and humble himself and then he ends up committing adultery and bringing shame on himself and God. He turned from worshiping God to worshiping himself, his flesh, and his own desires.

Selfishness is the great enemy of true worship. The problem is that we are all prone to be selfish. No one is exempt from this struggle, because it is at the core of all human nature.

1 Peter 5:6-9

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

God, give us the boldness to live selfless lives. Keep us Lord for Your glory and for Your name. In every decision help us to look to the future, to look to You and see how we should act; what direction we should take. All of this is so that You would be glorified in us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
